Strength Over Strokes: Showing Up for Our Community

This weekend I traded the closing table for a pair of walking shoes and joined neighbors for the Strength Over Strokes Walk, a morning about awareness, community, and showing up.

Some of the most meaningful moments in this business happen nowhere near a closing table. This weekend was one of them. I laced up my walking shoes and joined families, friends, and neighbors for the Strength Over Strokes Walk, a community morning dedicated to stroke awareness and to honoring the people whose lives it has touched.

Walking together on a bright Saturday morning.

There is something powerful about a crowd of people moving in the same direction for the same reason. We pulled on our matching tees, met up early, and set off together, grandparents, first-timers, and regulars alike. It was a good reminder that a neighborhood is so much more than the homes in it. It's the people who show up for one another.

Why this one matters

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability in the United States, and the majority of strokes are preventable. The catch is that they move fast, so spotting the warning signs early can save a life. The easiest way to remember them is F.A.S.T.:

  • F: Face drooping
  • A: Arm weakness
  • S: Speech difficulty
  • T: Time to call 911

If you ever notice these signs in yourself or someone else, don't wait, call 911 right away. A few minutes of awareness today could change everything for someone you love.

Community over everything

Helping families find home is my work, but it's not the only way I want to show up for this city. Whether it's a charity walk, a school drive, or a neighbor who just needs a hand, I believe in pouring back into the place we all call home. A huge thank-you to the organizers, the volunteers, and every single person who came out to walk, I'm already looking forward to next year.
